Unpacking the new Samsung Galaxy S20 Range
Samsung unwrapped its biggest present yet on 11 February, unveiling the S20 line and, with the unboxing, it took a huge leap into the world of 5G.
Launching its new devices at the Unpacked 2020 event in San Francisco, the South Korean tech giant announced they’d entered the new decade in style, offering a device range with style, substance and serious tech upgrades.
Veering off the path it’s previously been on with the numerical order; Samsung chose 2020 to jump forward and name their new device range the S20.
But the name wasn’t the only huge change for its devices. All its devices will be available in 5G and, outside the US, the S20 and S20+ will be available in 4G. Not selling anything but 5G devices in the United States feels like a huge statement from Samsung, and demonstrates it’s confidence in the shift in the market towards the 5G network.
In the modern world, cameras are increasingly becoming one of the most important features on a smartphone, and the S20 range doesn’t miss a beat.
The S20 Ultra and S20+ have an eye-popping four cameras, ensuring you’ll never miss a moment. To pack a bigger punch, the S20 Ultra has a 108-megapixel sensor on the wide-angle lens, making it one of the highest quality cameras available in a smartphone. Not to be outdone, the S20 is also a triple threat with a trio of cameras all boasting exceptional quality.
As if snapping selfies and scenery wasn’t enough, the S20 range will also be able to shoot 8K video, and each device comes equipped with a unique feature, ‘Single Take’, which allows a user to take one short video and get multiple options to choose from including boomerangs, looping, AI etc.
The sleek, glossy design Samsung is known for returns and the high-end smartphone will also come in three variations and three display sizes: S20 comes in at 6.2″, S20+ at 6.7″ and S20 Ultra at 6.9″.
The S20 range is also thinner than the S10 but, what the S20 lacks in width, it makes up for in height and has a 20:9 aspect ratio. None of the phones has a headphone jack either, meaning you’ll need a pair of Samsung Galaxy Buds, or other wireless headphones, to be able to interact with your device fully.
With the new devices comes a new rainbow of colours and there’ll be three Galaxy S20 colours; Cloud Blue, Cloud Pink and Cosmic Gray with Cosmic Black reserved for the S20 Plus and S20 Ultra.
The previous S10 device was equipped with a 3,400mAh capacity battery whereas the S20 sees a nice boost thanks to a 4,000mAH battery coming encased inside the phone. There’s 12GB of RAM, 128GB of internal storage and, if that’s not enough, there’s a microSD card slot to expand the storage up to 1TB.
Should you run out of battery during the day, the Samsung S20 also includes superfast charging and, it’s compatible with wireless charging too. But, as much as you can wirelessly charge your S20 device, your device also acts as a wireless charger means you’ll be able to charge other things, including your Galaxy Buds, on the back of your S20 device as well.
With 5G-enablement coming as standard, download speeds could be 6x faster than 4G in some parts of the world.
