In this 'tell us about your tech' interview, Michael Jannery, President & CEO at Entuity, reveals what technologies help his business remain successful.
What is your business’s best tech investment?
Everyone knows that network management has been around since the dawn of time, and although it’s not the flashiest component of the network, it is a critical one.
I have found that enterprises today don’t even think about network management until something goes very wrong and IT can’t come up with a quick resolution. A SWAT team is then formed – a combination of the server, network, application and database teams – to sit down and review the situation. This SWAT team alone can waste more than £112 per hour, per person. An online retailer, for example, experienced a complete outage, which lasted for several hours, at its key distribution facility during the Christmas period. By the time IT figured out the problem, millions of dollars had already been lost in sales. Think how easy is it for consumers to go to another vendor for that same item – it takes just one click. In this situation, a strong network management system would have proactively alerted IT to the device failure. But what actually happened was the device that failed wasn’t being managed.
Network management is one of the best tech investments because it’s an insurance policy that enables companies to remain online, operational and successful.
What are your business’s biggest tech challenges & how do you overcome them?
At Entuity, our biggest tech challenge is supporting some of the best-known, largest company networks in the world. We find ourselves in a position that requires us to evaluate evolving best practices and new technology, before using this information to understand how our customers need to implement them. As you’d expect, this is no easy task because there is more than one way to design an IT environment. It is important that we work closely with our customers to grasp their unique requirements and translate them into product enhancements.
Our customers think ‘out of the box’ and that encourages us to design products that reflect that mantra. Keeping up with IT trends is our biggest tech challenge. Our software engineers deliver product updates twice a year to accommodate industry changes and customer needs. The schedule is one of the most aggressive in the industry, but as one of our customers stated: ‘a software vendor that always improves its products is instrumental to our continued success as an IT organization.’
What new tech are you excited about?
New software delivery options for network management solutions. An example of this is using software-as-a-service (SaaS) as the platform in a network management application. By doing this, businesses will be able to take advantage of enterprise-class network management in a form factor that is appropriate to its size.
What tech advice would you give to other businesses in your sector/generally?
The foundation of all new applications and technology rests on the availability of the network, so don’t neglect network management. Utilise a solution that is updated consistently, can easily scale, and integrates into larger business service management (BSM) platforms. A strong network management solution can add value to an IT team through manual tasks being automated. This reduces the chances of error and provides valuable reports that validate activity to ensure success.
