In this 'tell us about your tech' interview, Rupert Collier from Paessler, reveals the tech that helps protect his business's network.
What is your business’s best tech investment?
If we’re talking recent investments, the drone that we sent out to film our headquarters in Nuremberg. However, prior to that the best one would probably be the personal computer that was used by our founder and CEO, Dirk Paessler, to create his very first lines of programming code back in the early 90s. What started as the vision of one man to create the best possible network monitoring software, has since grown to quite a few more lines of code and a product that is called the PRTG Network Monitor. Thousands of people around the world are now using the solution to make their networks and websites faster, more responsive and more reliable.
What are your business’s biggest tech challenges & how do you overcome them?
As an IT company, we face the same challenge that every organisation dependent on its technology does – keeping it up and running. That’s why we developed our own network monitoring software in the first place. It not only detects a system failure when it happens, but it continuously monitors a network and IT structure to uncover problems long before they get serious, enabling owners to take proactive measures.
What new tech are you excited about?
Well, we are still waiting for that ‘Back to the Future’ hoverboard! Other than that, we try not to jump on every tech band wagon around, we prefer to wait and see what technology our customers will really use in the future. At the moment we are creating an app that allows PRTG to be accessed from the newly-released Apple Watch. It’s always interesting to discover new ways how our software is being used.
What tech advice would you give to other businesses in your sector/generally?
Since our software is used by IT admins in over 170 countries worldwide, we will stick with a bit of classic IT wisdom that seems to fit everywhere: ‘Have you ever tried resetting the router?’ And of course, our other advice would be ‘tell your admin that they can get a free trial version of PRTG at our website‘ – they might thank you later.
