Ultrafast Broadband
Ultrafast broadband, also known as Single Order Generic Ethernet Access Fibre to the Cabinet (SoGEA, FTTC), is a cutting-edge broadband technology that, like Superfast Broadband, doesn’t require a phone line to function. Instead, Ultrafast uses fibre optic cables to connect to the local cabinet, significantly enhancing internet speeds and reliability.
At its core, Ultrafast broadband operates on a similar principle to Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) technology. Fibre optic cables are laid from the central exchange to a local street cabinet.
However, instead of requiring a separate phone line for internet access, Ultrafast eliminates this need, streamlining the setup process and potentially reducing costs for users.

Ultrafast is very similar to Superfast – both are modern broadband technologies aimed at improving internet access for homes and businesses. However, while they share similarities in their goals of providing high-speed internet without the need for a separate phone line, there are key differences between the two technologies:
Speed
Ultrafast broadband can deliver faster download and upload speeds because it utilises fibre optic technology. The speeds it’s capable of mean it can deliver a more consistent and reliable performance.
Reliability
Fibre optic cables used in Ultrafast broadband connections offer better reliability and stability compared to traditional copper lines. Fibre is less susceptible to interference, signal degradation and environmental factors, resulting in a more consistent internet connection.
Availability
Whilst availability can vary depending on geographical location and existing infrastructure, Ultrafast broadband may be more widely available in areas where fibre optic infrastructure hasn’t fully been deployed yet.
Future Expansion
The infrastructure provided by Ultrafast broadband gives a pathway for future expansion towards full fibre broadband.
Ultrafast enhances broadband connectivity without the need for a separate phone line. Not only that but Ultrafast offers greater speeds, it’s more reliable and tends to be available in more areas. Installing Ultrafast also helps should you want to expand to full fibre in the future.
