Now that we all know the superb new features of the iPhone 14, it’s time to tackle the age-old annual debate of which iPhone is the most suitable for you. This time the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 are in the spotlight to weigh out the pros and cons of each device to assist you in selecting the right handset. At the end of the day, it is reasonable to want a device that will deliver on every demand you have, but also have the longevity that will provide you with years of use. Here are some crucial things you may want to consider before you make your final decision.

Battery Life

This may be no surprise that Apple has managed to find a new method once again to improve their battery life for another year running. Although there isn’t a massive leap in playback time between the standard, Pro and Max devices of both models, the newer releases do have a slightly greater playback time to help stretch your battery life when watching videos, streaming or listening to music.

Camera

Let’s move on to the camera and here is a massive change you need to know about. The standard iPhone 13 camera offers an Ultra-wide Dual Camera System at 12mps and a TrueDepth front camera. The standard iPhone 14 model, however, now has an Advanced Ultra-wide Dual Camera System at 12mps and a True Depth front camera with autofocus to automatically lock in the subject you want to capture and create a sharp quality photo. The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max also both offer an Ultra-wide Camera System at 12MP and TrueDepth front camera but with the addition of a Telephoto lens. This means the subjects in the background of a photo that are at a distance will no longer be pixelized as witnessed on prior iPhones. This will make taking group photos a lot easier and richer regardless of where the individuals happen to be positioned in the photo. Both the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max devices have an Ultra-wide Camera System, Telephoto lens and TrueDepth with autofocus like their former, but with an additional impressive 48-megpixel camera. They also contain a revived A16 Bionic chip which will assist in better stabilising a video whilst on the move.

Display

This year Apple has made a major change to the classic notch that has been sitting at the top of the display on the iPhone 13 and older models. There is now a newly introduced ‘Dynamic Island’ feature otherwise known as an animated notch that will home the face ID component and front facing camera. It will also be able to notify you with changes inside your widgets, control music and preview calls. Unfortunately, this feature is only available on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max handsets. There isn’t much variation between the standard iPhone models, both still have the 6.1 – inch Super Retina XDR display, exact brightness capabilities, HDR, Haptic Touch and 60HZ refresh rate.  But there has been a slight tweak with the 14 Pro and Max handsets. Alongside the Dynamic Island feature in the 14 Pro and Max models you will also have:

  • an ‘Always-on display’ to cut out iPhone response time
  • an improved pixel resolution from 2532 x 1170 to 2556 x1179 (2796 x 1290 on Pro Max)
  • 2,000 nits peak brightness for better screen visibility outdoors
  • 1,600 nits peak brightness (HDR) from the previous 1,200 nits peak brightness (HDR)

Processor

Now those of you who are disappointed with the standard iPhone 14 model not containing the new A16 Bionic Chip, you may want to consider the 14 Pro or Max as a potential handset instead. The A16 Bionic Chip suggests a faster processor to increase productivity levels in less time, a smoother streaming and gaming experience and improved camera performance. Apple have also implied that the 6-core CPU that is available in both the iPhone 13 and 14 ranges, will supposedly run better in the A16 Chip to give optimal performance.

Safety Features

If you watched the Apple Launch Event and were just as speechless as we were about the latest safety feature update then you can see where this is heading. Crash detection and satellite communication are the two significant features being introduced to the iPhone 14. The crash detection software has been specially designed to detect a crash and automatically contact emergency services if the user is unresponsive. The satellite communication feature is a remarkable new addition to Apple technology and perhaps any other existing commercial phone before it. If the user finds themselves in a deserted location with no service, the detectors within the phone will locate and connect to a satellite in space, and provide the connection needed to contact emergency services.
